1. Increased Weakness and Sleeping More
One of the earliest and most noticeable changes is extreme fatigue. The person may:
- Sleep most of the day
- Have very little energy to move or speak
- Show reduced interest in food, conversation, or surroundings
This happens because the body is gradually slowing down its normal functions and conserving energy.
2. Reduced Eating and Drinking
It is very common for appetite and thirst to decrease significantly. The person may:
- Eat only small amounts or refuse food completely
- Drink very little fluid
- Lose interest in favorite meals
This is a natural part of the body’s slowing metabolism. Forcing food or water at this stage is usually not recommended without medical guidance.
3. Changes in Breathing Patterns
Breathing may become irregular. Some people may experience:
- Long pauses between breaths
- Shallow or uneven breathing
- A pattern sometimes called “Cheyne–Stokes breathing” (gradual changes in depth and pace)
These changes can look concerning, but they are often part of the natural process as the body reduces oxygen demand.
4. Confusion or Withdrawal
