A heartbreaking scuba diving tragedy in the Maldives has left families, friends, and the global diving community in shock after five Italian divers lost their lives during a dangerous underwater expedition.

Among the victims was 22-year-old Giorgia Sommacal, a university student and passionate diver whose final messages have now touched thousands online. According to reports, Giorgia was part of a group exploring deep underwater caves near Vaavu Atoll when the fatal accident occurred.

As recovery teams continued searching the dangerous cave system, Giorgia’s boyfriend, Federico Colombo, shared an emotional tribute that revealed the young diver’s final words and her deep love for the ocean. During a memorial service in Italy, he described how diving made her feel “free and alive,” adding that the sea was the place where she felt most connected to herself.

Friends say Giorgia had inherited her passion for marine life from her mother, Monica Montefalcone, a respected marine biologist and professor at the University of Genoa. Tragically, Monica also died during the expedition alongside several other experienced divers.

The group reportedly descended to depths of around 160 feet while exploring a complex underwater cave system often referred to as “Shark Cave.” Investigators are now examining whether strong currents, equipment issues, or dangerous diving conditions contributed to the disaster.

What has especially moved people online is the emotional message shared by Giorgia’s boyfriend after her death. In his tribute, he reflected on how suddenly life can change and encouraged others to appreciate loved ones while they still can.

“Don’t wait to tell people you love them,” he reportedly wrote during the memorial.
