Watermelon is one of the most refreshing fruits during warm weather, but not every watermelon is safe to eat. Sometimes the outside looks perfectly normal while the inside may already be spoiled, overripe, or contaminated.

That’s why experts recommend paying attention to certain warning signs before cutting into or eating a watermelon.

1. Strange Cracks or Splits Inside

One of the biggest red flags is unusual cracking inside the fruit. While small natural gaps can happen occasionally, large internal cracks or hollow sections may indicate the watermelon became overripe, grew too quickly, or started breaking down internally.

If the flesh looks dry, uneven, or unusually separated, it’s safer not to eat it.


2. Slimy or Mushy Texture

Fresh watermelon should feel crisp and juicy. If the inside becomes:

  • Slimy
  • Sticky
  • Excessively mushy
  • Foamy

this may mean bacteria or fermentation has started developing.

Spoiled fruit can sometimes cause stomach discomfort or food poisoning symptoms if consumed.


3. Sour or Unusual Smell

A healthy watermelon smells mildly sweet and fresh. A sour, fermented, or alcohol-like odor is a strong sign the fruit has gone bad.

This happens because sugars inside the fruit begin fermenting over time.


4. Unnatural Colors or Dark Spots

If you notice:

  • Black patches
  • White fuzzy mold
  • Very dark soft spots
  • Strange discoloration

the fruit may be contaminated or decaying internally.

Visible mold means the watermelon should be discarded immediately.


5. Bubbling or Fizzy Flesh

Some spoiled watermelons develop tiny bubbles or a fizzy sensation inside. This is another sign of fermentation caused by bacterial or yeast growth.

Even if the fruit “looks mostly okay,” fizzing is not normal for fresh watermelon.
