Donald Trump has sparked intense controversy after publicly suggesting that some American citizens convicted of violent crimes could potentially be sent to prisons in El Salvador — including the country’s notorious mega-prison known as CECOT.

The comments quickly triggered backlash from legal experts, civil rights organizations, and political opponents, many of whom argued the proposal would likely violate the U.S. Constitution. Trump reportedly discussed the idea while speaking about crime, immigration, and international prison agreements.

The prison at the center of the controversy is El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, often referred to as CECOT. The massive facility became globally known after President Nayib Bukele launched an aggressive anti-gang crackdown that led to the imprisonment of tens of thousands of suspected gang members.

Images and videos from inside the prison have repeatedly gone viral online because of the harsh conditions, heavily armed guards, and overcrowded cell blocks. Human rights groups have criticized the prison system, while supporters argue Bukele’s policies dramatically reduced gang violence across El Salvador.

Trump’s remarks drew attention after he suggested that “homegrown criminals” from the United States could potentially be transferred there in the future. Reports indicate he discussed the possibility during conversations involving international detention and deportation policies.
